Beachy waves are out, as are shiny perfect curls. Instead, loose, sexy curls are in. Find out how to get them with these step-by-step instructions.



Here's How:



Prep hair with a styling spray (I love Bumble and Bumble's Thickening Spray, which works wonders on fine hair). Spritz on roots and comb through hair.



Part hair down the center.



Blow dry hair, scrunching hair as you go. If you have curly hair, don't scrunch, instead dry straight with a paddle brush.



When hair is about 90 percent dry, separate hair as you would to create two pigtails. Secure pigtails with pony tail holders.



Take one side and twist hair in one direction. Hair will naturally twist itself into a bun. Secure at ear level with a ponytail holder. You can keep hair in place with bobby pins.



Repeat on the other side, so you have two buns at ear level.



Blast the buns and your whole head with the dryer for about 5-10 minutes or until hair seems dry.



Leave hair in buns for 10-20 minutes to set. Just before you leave, take hair out of buns and finger comb curls. (Do not brush out). You can apply a texturizing spray to separate the waves and keep them from looking "too perfect."



Spritz hairspray and you're done!

Stick-Straight Hair? How to Get it To Curl

I got a letter recently from someone dying for wavy hair, but her hair is stick-straight and won't hold a curl. Is there some sort of spray she needs, she wonders. Well yes, and no. While most hair has some natural curl in it, some of us have really, really straight hair that won't curl. The key to curl is product. Product allows curls to stay.

Start with a thickening spray (I like Bumble & Bumble) applied to wet hair at the crown and roots. Comb through. Blowdry hair then spritz styling spray to 2-inch sections before curling either with a curling iron or in hot rollers. Finger-comb hair and set with styling spray. If this doesn't work, don't fight it. Maybe curls aren't for you.

Curyl Hair - How to Get the Perfect Ringlets

To get perfect ringlets, start with damp hair.

Step 1: Apply a dime-sized amount of serum AND gel through hair from mid-strand to the ends.

Step 2: Take small sections from the top of your head & twist them down to the ends. Let them fall.

Step 3: Dry sections with a diffuser from roots to ends. (Don't scrunch your curls otherwise you could cause frizzing, instead cup the hair from below).

Step 4: When hair is almost completely dry, bend over & shake curls loose. Massage hair at the crown, this will add body.

Step 5: Flip hair back & finish styling with your fingers. Do NOT use a brush.

Curls are great for fall. Forgo the beachy waves of summer, and give hair more defined curls this fall. False eyelashes continue to be a trend. If you find yours are too much, clip them with scissors.

How to Apply False Lashes

Here's what you need:

-good pair of tweezers

-eyelash glue-lashes...

I would suggest that you start with individual lashes instead of strip lashes which are the most difficult to apply. Pick up the lashes with the tweezers.

Dip the tips of the lashes into a little glue.

Position the lashes where you want the extra length and hold in place until the glue sets.

Note:
It is a good idea to curl your natural lashes so that they will have the same amount of curl as the lashes that you have just set in place.

If you normally use mascara on your lashes to darken them, do so before attaching the new lashes.

Once you have mastered the individual lashes, then you can move onto lash strips. But chances are, you won't want to. They can easily look fake if the application is not perfect.

How to Get Smokey Eyes

The smoky eye hasn't gone out of style, but what has updated is the color palette. Instead of your basic brown of years past, try a gray Kohl pencil with shades of pinks and grays on the lid. Lining the inside rims of the eyes is also a stylish updated look for fall, although it can make small eyes appear beady.

How to Get Smokey Eyes

Prep the lid. The key to keeping eyeshadow from melting into your eyelid crease as the day goes on is to kept eyelids oil-free. To do this start with an eyeshadow base (also called "primer").

Apply eyeliner. If you're going for a typical black, brown or gray smoky eye, apply liner in one of those colors above the upper lash line, drawing line thicker in the middle of eye. If your opting for a jewel-toned eye (violet makes a gorgeous smoky eye), line eyes with a purple, blue or deep green liner.

Blend in color on bottom lashes For color on the bottom (a key smoky eye look) you'll want a lighter eyeliner. The key is to "smudge it." You can also apply a bit of shadow to get full smudge effect.

Apply light base color Again, the key to a smoky eye is pairing a lighter base with the darker hue. I prefer a nice cream shade for my base. Sweep a light, shimmery shadow over the lids to your browbone.

Blend in darker color, but keep dark color below the crease. Now that you have the base and eyeliner on, it's time to get the smoky effect. You need a darker eyeshadow shade. Using an eyeshadow brush blend in color starting at your lash line, blending up. Make sure to blend color into the lash line so the eye liner disappears. Stop deep color at crease.

Doublecheck your work Make sure eyes match and blend color with a Q-tip if need be.
Finish with several coats of volumizing mascara.

The Cat Eye

The New York Times recently had an article in the Style Section making fun of fall beauty trends, which are always pretty similar every year: out goes the bronzed skin and the beachy waves, in comes the pale skin, the dark lips and the sleek hair. But this year has some surprises in store.

Here, Angelina Jolie sports the "cat eye," a hot trend for fall that was all over the Emmys red carpet this year. Get this look with brown or black liquid eyeliner, making sure to make the line just a bit outside the eye with a little curve up.

The Cat Eye

Forget the advice you may have read in the past never to line the inside rims of eyes because it makes eyes look tiny. Sexy cat eyes are a cool look for night. The key to this look is to apply a thin line to the inside rims of the lids.

Step 1: Holding the skin of your upper lid taut, dot liquid liner along the upper lash line as close to the eye as possible. Apply line from corner to corner of eye, extending the line upward at the outer corner of eye. Let liner dry for a few minutes before touching.

To soften this look (black liquid liner can be harsh), InStyle Magazine suggests trying a smudgeable pencil in a lighter color like dark brown or charcoal.

Step 2: Hold down the lower lid and apply liner only to the outer three quarters of the rim. Fade out the line as you approach the tear duct, according to makeup artist Mally Roncal in the March 2006 edition of InStyle Magazine. Extend the liner upwards at the outer corners.

For a softer version of this look, use an eye shadow brush and sweep a taupe or brown color on the lower lash line.

7 Tricks to make your eyes look larger

To get huge eyes try these tricks:

1. Always curl lashes before applying mascara. You can actually curl lashes AFTER mascara is applied, as long as your mascara is dried (a good tip to know if you want to curl your lashes later in the day without removing your mascara).

2. Don't forget your bottom lashes. For years I avoided mascara on them until a makeup expert showed me how much mascara on my lower lashes really make my eyes pop. I rarely go without now. To apply mascara on lower lashes, hold the brush vertically, then sweep it back and forth.

3. Individual false lashes are exotic, gorgeous and can look natural if applied correctly. Large cities offer "lash bars" in the hottest department stores. (Henri Bendel, Bergdorfs and more, for example) but I expect the counters at most department stores will have experts in false lashes. Ask at yours.
Don't want to go to department store? Drugstores carry false eyelashes. If they're too long, you can trim them with scissors.

4. For a doe-eyed, seductive look, makeup artist *Paul Starr suggests you try lining your lower lids with a creamy white eye pencil.

5. White liner may sound odd, but it really opens up the eye. You can also try putting it on the inside corner of both your upper and your lower lids.

6. Another way to open up eyes is to skip the white eyeliner and opt instead for a platinum highlighter. Dot along the browbone, then blend in. Apply highlighter at the inner corners of your eyes. Follow with eye shadow.

7. Make sure your brows are manicured. Until you get your brows professionally waxed, tweezed or threaded, you won't realize how much they affect the rest of your face. Cleaning up your brow line of stray hairs, adding a slight arch and filling in sparse spots are key to making eyes look much larger.

I find once you get a professional brow job, you can do it yourself for a few months using the pro job as a "map" of where to tweeze. To keep brows in place, try a clear eyebrow gel or just spritz a bit of hairspray onto an old toothbrush and brush brows in perfect place.
